Florida: an Ideal Place for Solar Energy

Florida, otherwise known as "The Sunshine State" has become a leader in solar energy solutions. Global warming threatens Florida because it is surrounded on three sides by water, and a rise in sea levels could affect the amount of ground above water. Governor Crist has done much to encourage government, businesses and homeowners to convert energy use to solar. However, some homeowners associations have rules prohibiting the use of solar panels on rooftops. Condo associations, for example, own the roofs and want them to look uniform. According to Residential Energy Experts, these homeowners association rules against solar panels are illegal under state law, unless they are in neighborhoods with condominiums or townhouses. Also, many neighborhoods have trees, which are good and reduce the need for air conditioning. However, some developers have taken all of the trees out of new developments prior to building. This seems counterintuitive, since it is hot here for much of the year, and people in those neighborhoods have an average power bill of as much as $400.00 a month, which could be dramatically reduced if they either planted shade trees around their houses or put solar panels on the roofs. Because of the initial investment costs, many homeowners are reluctant to go solar. There are some panels that heat the water in water heaters rather than producing energy to be sold to the power companies for credits towards power bills. These are less costly. Florida has developed an initiative to encourage homebuilders to install water-heating solar panels on the roofs of new homes. The state has also given green status to many hotels that have taken steps towards energy efficiency.

Florida also has made an effort to raise awareness in schools by both installing solar panels at the schools and through educational programs for students. The state has also started a program that distributes solar water heaters to some people in low income areas. Many of the solar initiatives in Florida have occurred under Governor Crist's leadership. The state has also partnered with some countries in Europe in an effort to spearhead efforts to slow climate change globally.

When I was growing up in North Carolina, which is really only hot for three months of the year, a friend of mine's parents had solar panels on their roof. My friend said that their power bill was usually only about seven dollars a month, if they had a power bill at all. If homeowners and business people were aware of the amount of money that they could save if they put panels on a new house or a house they just purchased, I am sure they would not be as likely to question the initial costs.

Artistic Vision

Is an artist's "vision" primarily a product of experience or imagination? I don't want to pursue the simple answer that it's both. Is it primarily one or the other, of if it's just plain old both, how do they interact to create an imaginary world?

Is it true that some people have more artistic vision than others, or is this kind of seeing equally available to all?
