Knowledge is Power!

Is a fictive imaginary world more engaging if it's realistic or fantastic?

I'm getting ready to teach a "topics in literature" course at West Chester University, and I'm returning to one of my favorite themes, imaginary worlds. Although every literary world is an imaginary world, some are more obviously imaginary than others. In the pop culture, there are signs that the there's a turn of the wheel from "reality tv" to more obviously imaginary worlds like "Heroes." Our fascination with fantasy in popular film is another sign to me that imaginary worlds are becoming more and more appealing.

I have theories as to why this is so, but I'm interested in others' views.

Hi Ted
This is a posting to Stacy a few minutes ago
Artistic expression is suppressed to individuals, because of individuals or law, to the fabric of time and space art is built in and is limited to the imagination only. and in three forms past, present, and future, which are interpreted in 5 ways
1. Visually in the eyes of the beholder
2. Touch too feel, hold, to have to posses
3. Hearing a moving symphony or riding the notes of music
4. Tasting the emotions of pain, enjoyment and pleasure
5. Smell to activate the invisible chemicals of DNA

Some art carries a donated value but no nutrient value to survival just historical

Shooting the artist is tantamount to shooting the messenger.
As Darwin discovered, species diverge and adapt; they diverge and they adapt. Again, they diverge and adapt. They adapt to what? They adapt to their environment.
Darwin would discover a bird evolving and acting a certain way on one island only to travel to another island half a world apart to discover the same species. But wait; something was different! While the species had similarities, their characteristics evolved differently.
What changed? The environment changed. And what did the environment change? It changed the species!

Leon's response of speed of change adds an interesting perspective. I would have to say that speed of change occurs faster on the top of the iceberg, than the bottom.
The top being the most conscious point, is subject to rapidly changing trends; while the bottom or least conscious part of the iceberg is firmly embedded in long standing traditions.
I guess it could be surmised that the top of the iceberg is emotionally driven by fashions or art in general. The feel good stuff. Think of how long it took to change a trend in the 1800s compared to now.

If art is as integral to our survival as it seems to be then the freedom of artists is essential. Think of all the places in the world where artistic expression is suppressed. In the U.S. censorship takes complicated forms, but it's definitely a reality that is harming us incredibly.

Hi Ted
Culture is more than the iceberg below it is the speed of the flowing stuff it’s floating in Culture is passed on and definitive, Improvement comes with awareness trail and error, study and training in areas of mind and intellect, donates personal art taste and skills, tools of a cultures are use to shape change and build with. Our culture speed is we haven’t been the same since television.

Oh, most absolutely. Like you I am a professor. Since I'm always traveling, I teach online. The school is Embry-Riddle Aero Unv and most of my students consist of corporate pilots either living overseas or flying overseas on a regular basis. I enjoy it; especially, since my travels enable me to sometimes get together with my students in unique parts of the world.
When dealing with other countries it's important to have a global understanding of cultures and their distinct differences. In fact dealing with these differences as well as aviation law are my specialties.
What I teach these students is that culture is like an iceberg and just as the majority of an iceberg lies below the waterline, so does the subliminal culture of people.
In short, the smaller part of the iceberg that pokes out of the water, is that which we are consciously aware of. The unconsciously, that which is below the waterline is what's really important and the hardest to change. An example might be the deep roots created by religion which leads to conflicts such as exist in the Middle East. People know they must get along, but because of these roots they're at a lost to explain they continue in the opposite direction.
It's hard to explain all this without getting long winded, but I can tell you that marketers spend big bucks to go as far as to put cameras in peoples houses so as to discover what lies at the bottom of the cultural iceberg.
Art in all its forms (writings, drawings, productions, etc.) all indirectly affect who you are. In fact, you are your environment (the mirror image effect). An example might be Hitler's influence on Germans. One more reason to make sure your kids keep the right kind of friends.
Anyway I'm trying not to get long winded. Put think about how infotainment is affecting the new up-crop of kids and then read the RenGen Book and see if you don't notice the trends for yourself. The book provides strong evidence of how art is shaping a new generation of children and how it parallels much of what happened during the last renaissance era.
Yes, art effects are survival. The cultural iceberg is one way of looking at cultures effect in different countries. In fact I'm working on a web site called culturaliceberg.com which is far from finished, but will eventually identify many of these cultural differences on a country by country basis.

Ted, you may be right that the distinction between want and need isn't that important when it comes to fantasy, especially if we see it as all survival-oriented. But I wonder if most people think art is related to our survival at all. What do you think?

Hi Stacy
Two of my favorite carbon copy species of twentieth century minds Carl and Sigmund they enjoyed first hand trail and error, I bet they know a lot off things that don’t work. I have some enjoyment for Dr. Spock and Sherlock Holmes as well because of the logic evolved.

Wants and Needs. Does it matter? When cavemen draw over-sized images of animals on their walls or a teenager pins up an over-sized poster of their idol aren't they both fantasizing about something they don't have.

Artistic Vision

Posted by Stacy Esch on November 6, 2023 at 8:15pm 10 Comments

Is an artist's "vision" primarily a product of experience or imagination? I don't want to pursue the simple answer that it's both. Is it primarily one or the other, of if it's just plain old both, how do they interact to create an imaginary world?

Is it true that some people have more artistic vision than others, or is this kind of seeing equally available to all?

Trying to find treatment.

In the beginning of August 2008 I was doing great. I went to the gym 3 times a week for 3 hours each time. I had lost weight and had a nice tone coming. I was nicely tanned with some help of the tanning beds. I rode my motorcycle back and forth to work and to the gym. In the middle of August a leg press came down on top of my head while i was trying to get it reset to the proper location so I would be able to use the equipment. I got very dizzy and had to go home, that was the end of my…
