Knowledge is Power!

Is a fictive imaginary world more engaging if it's realistic or fantastic?

I'm getting ready to teach a "topics in literature" course at West Chester University, and I'm returning to one of my favorite themes, imaginary worlds. Although every literary world is an imaginary world, some are more obviously imaginary than others. In the pop culture, there are signs that the there's a turn of the wheel from "reality tv" to more obviously imaginary worlds like "Heroes." Our fascination with fantasy in popular film is another sign to me that imaginary worlds are becoming more and more appealing.

I have theories as to why this is so, but I'm interested in others' views.

Hero is one of archetypes of the collective unconscious (C. Jung). Also have a look at, Joseph Campbell's, "Power `of the Myth", section "Hero's Journey". Umberto Eco is perfect choice to learn on 'Beauty'

Hi Solstice
Since things create thoughts be it audible or visually,
be careful of the input, wants are design to increase profits not survival.

in other words we fill our lives with the things we want rather than the things we need.

hi i have been following your discussion and I think that the Venus of Willendorf doll was at the time the ideal woman not the fantasy. Todays cultural shift has left us wanting rather than needing. So we fantasize about Barbie and place our wanton feelings above our actual needs.

Leon, it seems like you're saying that we are fooled by the "seeing is believing" mindset, that we get suckered by this kind of visualized truth that isn't truth at all.

Utopian visions may not be appearing in our literature anymore these days, but they are appearing exactly where you say, on a billboard, in every billboard, in practically every advertisement. We're bombarded with them constantly, and they employ such powerful visual language that we are practically powerless to disagree with them. Feeding us vision after vision of material and sensual bliss, they dictate our notions of the 'good life" and not with Plato's capital Good. Instead of liberating us, these fantasies enslave us.

Stacy said that it takes a special type of mind to sift, sort, analyze, and characterize all that information, so let me take a go at it. Back then it was logic and serve a purpose today 90 % of all process information is visual. Like meals on billboards or order menu it has to be visually appealing same for attraction opposite attract. It is normally short live without truth. Which is emotional feeling that’s because seeing is believing.

It sounds like this is where you are headed: "We always say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I think it may be more in the eye of the culture!"
You couldn't have answered your own question better. The eye of the culture has a lot to do with our actions whether we admit it or not.

Ted, I know that Venus statue--I remember a documentary about it that was fascinating.

We always say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I think it may be more in the eye of the culture!

Does an imaginary world create its own standard of beauty? Is there an absolute beauty? We don't really think that way, but it seems that everyone in our culture has this ideal image of beauty firmly implanted, and the Barbie ideal is a pretty close physical representation of it. We may yell and scream about how unrealistic it is, but nevertheless millions of girls aspire to it. Why?

Plato philosophized that beauty is an absolute in the realm of Ideal Forms. Is he right? Or is whether he's right or wrong completely besides the point, since we seem to act as if he's right anyway. We carry around these ideals and try to live up to them.

John Keats seems to echo Plato in his famous poem, "Ode on a Grecian Urn" when he writes that "'Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all / Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.'" Is this an expression of absolutes?

Suddenly what we imagine as beauty rises to the status of truth.

I'm not sure where I'm headed with this!

Artistic Vision

Posted by Stacy Esch on November 6, 2023 at 8:15pm 10 Comments

Is an artist's "vision" primarily a product of experience or imagination? I don't want to pursue the simple answer that it's both. Is it primarily one or the other, of if it's just plain old both, how do they interact to create an imaginary world?

Is it true that some people have more artistic vision than others, or is this kind of seeing equally available to all?

Trying to find treatment.

In the middle of August a leg press came down on top of my head while i was trying to get it reset to the proper location so I would be able to use the equipment. I got very dizzy and had to go home, that was the end of my…
