Hey,

I live here, and at 41 can certainly see the change from when I was a child to now. There was a time when the only option was a job (usually a secretary or an engineer or a doctor) now the scope has boomed - not only in metros but in small towns that are seeing benefits (as well as problems of modernisation).

Has it spread completely and evenly? No.
But at least the process has started.

I agree with Kannan about the strength of the Indian people. In India we have a term called 'Jugaad' i.e.workaround which we Indians are very good at. Many a times this 'jugaad' is used to work around the legal processes because government does not care to keep people happy. I have heard some of my non Indian friends talk of India as the place where you can get anything manufactured. Therefore this is a myth that Indians can't execute ideas into reality.

My original comments were on the polity of India and lack of leadership skills as well as intent. People in power only want to ensure that their own progeny becomes rich. The only hope is the private enterprise which is giving more and more employment opportunities to the common man.

The 'so-so' comment is vague. Where exactly are we failing? The way Metro Rail Project in Delhi was executed shows that we are capable if proper leadership is given. In the manufacturing front too, our handicrafts show that the skilled labour is capable of delivering quality products.

However, there has been a culture of 'chalta hai' in the past and it is needed to remove it. Look into the magnificent temples and other artefacts of the ore. We have done it then and we can definitely do it now.

Develop the required leadership. We require more Sreedharans (of Delhi Metro fame) and more Khanduris (Remember Goldern Quadrilateral Project - Highway Building) in all fronts and especially in Politics. Let us do some thing about it.

My experience with India & your citizens is limited to the contacts I have had in the USA. Be that as it may, here are my observations. The Indian people are brilliant when
it pertains to intellectual things, so-so when it comes to manufacturing what they can so brilliantly conceptualize..

Who is absorbing and sharpening the skills of our Engg. colleges? It is firms like TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Satyam, etc. In the first stage, they have been utilizing the opportunities abroad. Infosys does have a banking software of world class. The talent built here is the first stage and the next stage will be world class products.

We have to remembers that these companies have grown to the present size despite some of these beginning in the licence control era.

There is a great future for the country if we let our industry to develop. The Indian development story starts from 1991 only.

It is true that the present education with no vocational skills imparted, is a drain. The need is to evolve a curriculum consistent with the needs of imparting knowledge for fulfledged development of a child and at the same time, the vocational skills required for the economy. This should be free for every child and the existing system of private entrepreneurs making education a business should be done away with. In the earlier era, Government teachers used to be models for their students. Today, the situation is completely different. Industries must be encouraged to set up schools on charitable basis, if government does not have funds. There is a need to bring back the glory of guru-sishya relation in education.

Every child should have the opportunity to pursue curriculum it likes upto pg level.

India has great future. Let us be balanced and not worry about the negatives only. Let us list the negatives and find ways of removing them. AT the same time, let us also list the positives and take motivation from them and be confident that we can do!

I read the hindi version too.
A few around the nation are worried just like you.

Uneducation is a part of the problem. Even the present education is the other part of the problem.

The most irrelevant education, with reference to our problems, is only serving the purpose of gaining profits by the private institutions.

Engineering colleges are opend in every state with out proper vision for the use of talent if any generated from those colleges. The result is migration or remote slavery through call centers. No real progress is achieved for the nation.

TCS or other s/w firms are only helping the other nations to progress. They only produce application software not any original stuff, where by we can boast that we have made something. In any industry, how much do you think they spend on computerisation ? That cannot be the core business.
Our bridges are built by others, our roads are laid by others. What for we produce so many so called engineers?
We read the same problems of the rural folk, year after year, inspite of many engineers rolled out every year in the nation. The are never exposed to the problems of the nation.
The present education is a waste of life, as it cannot empower the students to tackle either the problems of the nation or to face their own life ahead.

Our youth are not aware of the dangers that are about to confront the nation in the near future, so while away their time in chating, movies etc.

Those who can see them are not in a decision making role, to change the destiny of the nation,

It is time for the like minded to unite & chalk out an action plan.
Whether the nation is great or not it is our nation, We have no other place to live,
