Energy Efficient, Green Building & Construction

Hello,
I have just completed a beautiful Energy Efficient, Compresses Earth Block home in Colorado and would like to exchange ideas with any other Green Builders / Constructors. I will continue to post pics / vids & info on this type of construction, in hopes to expand public knowledge of better building concepts that are environmentally healthy inside and out, as well as affordable.

Permalink Reply by Solstice Development Group on December 20, 2007 at 10:58am: It is a a bit more expensive than a stick built home. However you can offset some of these cost by manufacturing the block on site if you have the right amount of clay in the soil. The block stacking is more labor intensive as well as the finish on the interior block walls. We made aprox 6000 block on site to with a cost of around $.90 each. You can likely expect the cost to be around $115 US, per sq ft, which is about 20% higher than stick built. The cost will dramatically increase with more extravagant design and architecture. The blocks are 14"x10"x4", thus making the walls with finish on them about 12-14" thick. We also employed many other green ideas into the home, such as passive solar design and lay out on the lot, hydronnic in floor heating system, natural clay plaster interior finish and solid bamboo flooring. We stayed away from products that would out gas over the life of the home. The home is also set up for a 2500 KW photovoltaic solar system and all electric apps including the hydronic heater. The total monthly utilities on this home are around $100. This is where the green-ness pays off.; ▶ Reply to This
