Musing on 2008 and all it may bring
Hi, I am not in the habit of writing a blog. My son is, though, so I have a feel for the genre. He is 23 tomorrow, and has a healthy following for his blog, healthy enough anyway for the Google ads to eventually pay for his webhosting bills, so that's nice. I might even give you the link to his blog later..
Later in the month I am hoping to be flying off to Beijing to visit his sister ( my daughter) who is teaching English at a university close to the Olympic stadium that looks like a steel nest. Normally I can't get away in mid January, as I teach ( have done for nearly 25 years) in an agricultural college, but I have special dispensation to be away mid-term, and am taking advantage of relatively cheap flights to go and see her at the start of the winter holidays. Never been to China before, all rather daunting to tell the truth.
By 2 February I will have been in the same job, at the same college, for 25 years, which must be something rather unusual these days. The odd thing is that I am still learning, never feel I can rest up, they keep giving me new topics, groups and themes to teach on, keeping me on my toes. Don't know if anyone will make a fuss, they generally don't, but may do as two of us started at the same time, in 1983, and the other chap is also still in the same job.. I am now no stranger to 25th anniversaries, my wife and I having just celebrated our Silver Wedding Anniversary.. Doesn't time fly when you are having fun ? I promise you, it has been immense fun.
Another of my sons was 21 the other day, a special moment in anyones life. He is actively involved in direct action politics, quite an idealist in many ways ( lived for 2 years in a cabin in the garden to reduce his carbon footprint!).
My 4th ( and final) son is just 9, and about to start a new school, after a bit of a trauma, so that will be quite an experience for him.
My Knol on this site will probably be about building wooden canoes. I have developed a way of building a lovely birchply canoe which is so simple that even woodworking novices can manage it, with a bit of help, in about a weekend. I do this to supplement my income which is no longer what it was when I came into teaching. Have a look at www.birchcanoes.com and see the sort of canoe you could build for yourself, there's no secret, its easy to follow and great fun, I never tire of it, and the boats are a joy to paddle..

Artistic Vision

Is an artist's "vision" primarily a product of experience or imagination? I don't want to pursue the simple answer that it's both. Is it primarily one or the other, of if it's just plain old both, how do they interact to create an imaginary world?
Is it true that some people have more artistic vision than others, or is this kind of seeing equally available to all?
