Knowledge is Power!

Etiquette is accepted social behavior. Human being is a social animal. Therefore there are a set of laws that govern this person's social behavior. That is the reason why you dress not only to please yourself but to please others. If not to please at least not to offend them. You talk to them in a language that they understand. Be it verbal. Be it a sign language. Be it a dress. You wear dress to let them clearly understand how they should address you. That is the reason why in certain parts of the world when a man does things for a woman like opening a door, it is called chivalry. She in turns thanks him for the courtesy. That is a socially accepted behavior. And these norms or acts of social behavior helps us lead our life pleasantly.

Imagine if I were to adopt the expression of a frown for a greeting, instead of a smile and go out and meet people. They would be confused and rightly so, because ever since they were born a 'smile' is associated with pleasant experiences and a frown not that pleasant. I am sure now that you understand what is social norm or a behavior in particular cultural setting.

Similar is your book reading habit. This is a private setting. You are in a party. John wanted to meet to Jane and he pulled you along. You did not have the heart to disappoint him. You are surrounded by strangers. Or may be your mother pulled you along and you had nothing better to do. So you found this book and buried your head in. No. This is not when you should be reading a book. You should be reading a book when you are alone all by yourself. When I say alone all by yourself I mean precisely that. Alone.

You could be on a train or a bus. Yes, there are others around. But they are strangers. You are not in company. That is a different scenario. You can begin to read or begin from where you left off. But here, this is different occasion. You are invited, yes, may be even against your will. But that doesn't mean you should refuse to be a part of that setting. You stand out like a sore thumb. This is the ideal time to complete that book. May be you have some time on hand while you are waiting for this person to show up. That is the time to catch up with that book. But when you are in a party, you do not go to a corner and pull out a book and begin to read it. Remember this is a party and you are supposed to mingle with others and show interest in what the others have to tell you. You are to help them enjoy the event. Share their happiness or sorrow for that matter. No. You do not want to be a part of that party. Fine. No to appear rude, spend some time. Then get up, go to the host or the hostess, be polite but firm and inform that you are leaving. Give a reason. A plausible reason. And move out. By all means you can leave a party. No one can hold you against your will. But when you leave a party always make it a point to meet your hosts and inform them.

And go begin to read your book. A book is a best friend.

Like Groucho Marx said, “I find television to be very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go in the other room and read a book.” 615 words

Artistic Vision

Posted by Stacy Esch on November 6, 2023 at 8:15pm 10 Comments

Is an artist's "vision" primarily a product of experience or imagination? I don't want to pursue the simple answer that it's both. Is it primarily one or the other, of if it's just plain old both, how do they interact to create an imaginary world?

Is it true that some people have more artistic vision than others, or is this kind of seeing equally available to all?

Trying to find treatment.

In the beginning of August 2008 I was doing great. I went to the gym 3 times a week for 3 hours each time. I had lost weight and had a nice tone coming. I was nicely tanned with some help of the tanning beds. I rode my motorcycle back and forth to work and to the gym. In the middle of August a leg press came down on top of my head while i was trying to get it reset to the proper location so I would be able to use the equipment. I got very dizzy and had to go home, that was the end of my…
